How do I find out if a collection company is licensed in Indiana?

Hi Toohotnky,

Contact Dept of Financial Institutions in Indiana and inquire whether the CA is licensed there or not.

All collectors must have a legitimate license in the borrower's state before doing collections. Without a valid license, you can take legal actions against them and file complaints with the state Attorney General and the DFI.

Thanks for the feedback, I didnt find them registered there. They have to take me to court before they can put a freeze on my bank account right?

Hi,

So, they won't take the case to the court because they are not doing a legitimate business in your state. A collector must be licensed to do collections. With that said, they lose legal powers to access your checking account. You should try to make arrangements with the original creditor for payments.

Were they making threats to put a freeze on your bank account?
