my pay was garnished from an old credit card bill, i have tried to live with it, but i am struggling to much. I do have old debt as well as current, i am finding it harder and harder to pay these cards, if i file bankruptcy how long will it take to stop the wage garnishment, and do you have to pay the lawyer all upfront before it can be stopped??

Send a notice of filing bankruptcy to your employer and the creditor. All collection efforts should stop immediately. If the creditor still continues garnishment, you'll need to consult an attorney.
