Recently, I discovered negative information on my credit report in regards to an outstanding bill from a book club. The bill is no longer with the book club but is now with a collection agency who put the information on my credit report. I have no idea what I'm being charged for and I do not recall ever receiving a bill in this amount. How do I verify this charge and if it is legitimate how do I negotiate to have the information removed from my credit report once the bill is paid?
Send the CA a debt validation letter (You can find many sample letters here) and then they will have to show you where the amount came from. Also, They will be unable to call your home or report neg info to anyone until they validate the debt
After the debt validation letter should the poster dispute it on his or her credit report? Should they do it sooner? I would think that they would have to wait until they had the dv.
Send a dispute letter to the credit reporting agencies only if the CA cannot validate your account or if you do not agree with their validation. Else there is no use of sending a dispute letter to the CRAs.
