So what is the best way to clean up my cr and my DH cr. Some things that I am confused about is I see two accts that are the same on my dh cr, I see the providian acct and then the ca on his cr. It is the same debt. Can they report twice?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
The original creditor, and the collection agency that is currently collecting the account are permitted to report simultaneously. If a new CA begins collecting, it may report, but the old CA must be removed.

You CAN try to 'dispute' the 2 accounts, that are the same. On your CR it should state when the CA starting reporting the debt. I actually tried this, with an outstanding debt, I had, on my CR. The CB 'updated' the information. The Original Creditor was taken off, while the CA ( who 'owned' the same account now..) remained there.
Well Zster, the OC and the CA can report the same debt at the same time. However you can try and dispute.

Usually if it's the SAME account, I believe the dispute would work.
what should be the basis for the dispute? should I try to contact both?
You can mention account with the CA and you dealing with it. Try talking with your OC and then dispute with the bureau.
this was from 3 years ago and is paid. does that matter
debt
As I had mencjaned, 'disoute' the item, with the CB. You have it PIF?/ Good for you. At least, if you dispute it, you DO have a good chance for ONE of the items to come off...since it's for the same debt.
I have paid off accounts on my credit report, I have disputed them, they only put that it was paid off on them they would not remove them. It is really frustrating when you are trying to clean it up and they won't work with you, goodluck, hope you get accomplished what you need to.
Don't feel alone there goodnatured...I see this alot..they make promises but once they get your money they don't care. At least you paid them.

It's always good to have some kind of documentation when you make arrangements with CA's, etc. If you DO dispute the item for being on your CR (after you made arrangements with the CA's to remove the item after it was PIF..) you can send the proof to the CRA's. I know it can take time and can be frustrating.
