I am just curious if you can get a credit score this high by going thru a credit repair program like the one the Cowboy has! CODY THE CREDIT COWBOY?

I don't know..actually. I haven't gone through his program. But,,,,it would be great if I COULD get a Credit Score that high.

I have a tremendous volume of credit reports reviewed, and I can tell you that an 850 might as well be a unicorn... Nifty idea, but you'll never see one... Bear in mind that the scoring formula used by most mortgage companies only goes up to 850 anyway...

I've seen a few around 820, but they belonged to people in their fifties, who had been in the bureau records for years and years, having never had any derogatories, and with only the MOST responsible use of revolving credit. (credit cards)

SOOO, DOC...you're saying that a credit score, that high just isn't 'reality'...or is it? Anything close?

Hi Armadillo
It is not possible to increase your credit score to 850 just by going through credit repair programs. Credit repair programs can at the most remove some of the negative debt listing from your credit report only if you can make the creditor agree for pay for deletion. It may also remove some hard inquiry listings from your report if the inquiry is unauthorized, but this cannot increase your score to levels like 850. If any credit repair companies have promised you that they will do so, then they may be lying to get a business from you.

Yes, I agree with Mary. If you have a bad score and you want to improve your credit score by credit repair programs, it may help you to increase your score by at the most 100 points but not more than that. To improve your credit score to that level, you need to rebuild a good credit history again using your credit cards and at the same time try to pay off the existing debts by coming to a pay for deletion agreement with your creditor so that as soon as you pay off the debt the negative listing goes out of your credit report and your credit score improves.

I think that if you want to improve your credit score, you need to try it yourself instead of going for credit repair agencies. Even if you go to FTC site, you will find that they too recommend credit repair by yourself because you can do what the credit repair companies can do. Now if you repair it by yourself you can save the money which you would have otherwise paid to the repair agencies and use this money to repay the debt. You need to start from debt validation letters to creditors whose name appears in your report against a debt and send letters to the inquirers who had made hard inquiries in your credit report. You can find the sample letters if you visit the letters of credit section of this forum.

I see this post started out about a high credit score. Does anyone have any idea what the average persons credit score is? You always see numbers that are all over the place like 540, 620,780 so there has to ba just an average credit score number.

Fri, 12/05/2008 - 11:52 Permalink

Once again, I have to respectfully disagree with several items here...

Although it depends largely on where they start out, we REGULARLY raise people's credit scores over 150 points, and a few have even seen closer to 200 point increases... Obviously, if they have a 650 score to start, 100 points is tougher than if they start with a 550...

We DON'T just affect negative items. Inaccuracies in the reporting of POSITIVE tradelines can negatively impact score, and we work on those issues for our clients as well...

The FTC has the famed "Self-Help May Be Best" thing that comes up in every search for credit repair... "MAY" be best. They are simply working to prevent the average consumer with less knowledge than many of the folks on this forum generally have from getting duped by an unscrupulous company... They never say -and wouldn't- that it's a bad idea altogether. The bureaus discourage credit repair as a business because it hurts their bottom line, and successful credit repair brings to light the ridiculous flaws in their systems.

ALSO, the manual issued for furnishers of credit data says VERY CLEARLY that paid accounts SHOULD NOT be deleted from consumer files, but instead reflected to indicate a paid status. In fact, furnishers will often get chastised for deleting paid accounts...

Paying off charged-off or collection accounts DOES NOT positively impact your credit score, and DOES NOT mean that the item should be removed from your credit. In fact, PAYING a debt like that is more likely to harm your credit than help it, since the collection agencies often manipulate the date of last activity to make the accounts appear newer once you make a payment.

I have to agree with you on the point that paying off a debt that is in collections is sometimes the owrst thing to do. I try to tell people if the debt is protected by their states SOl then their best move is to leave it be and let it fall off. You have got my interest in a few things you have posted here. You say:
ALSO, the manual issued for furnishers of credit data says VERY CLEARLY that paid accounts SHOULD NOT be deleted from consumer files, but instead reflected to indicate a paid status. In fact, furnishers will often get chastised for deleting paid accounts...

Then how can they offer pay for deletes? You do see them often. Is this maybe why some people have problems getting the debt collector to hold up to their end of the bargain?

Also what flaws are in the FTC systems? I hear of people having problems wiht them frequently.

Fri, 12/05/2008 - 16:58 Permalink

They offer pay for delete letters, just like they do all theother CRAP... Illegally!

Not flaws in the FTC systems... Flaws in the credit reporting systems.... Truthfully, it's a terribly inaccurate system.

The FCRA allows for the completeness and accuracy of credit information on consumer files.... Almost all derogatory info is SOMEHOW inaccurate or incomplete, hence, our ability to remove it, or correct it...!

Thats great. I always tjhought once it reached your report then you were pretty much a goner for the next 7 years. I hop some of your clients come here and stand behind you. You seem an honest person.

Average credit score before this melt down was 692, now its im guessing around 630 to 640. Ok Credit Repair because FTC says different? Credit Bureaus are not owned by the goverment, they get paid to report items for creditors and collectors. So let me ask you this if you were getting kick backs from millions of peoples info from creditors and collectors why would you want to tell as mass of people how to fix it. Also look at it this way, if 300,000,000 people have items being reported and recorded and the average credit report has 8 accounts, and there are 3 major credit reporting agencies , and the people doing the data entry and reporting are only human, how often do you think errors happen? These are all food for thought, you do your own research and shead some light on these issues. I hope this sheads some lights on these issues. Yes I am real, and I help real people with goals. If you are serious about repairing your credit to buy a home, refi, get a new car, or just improve your credit rating contact me.

Well finally some sensible advice. I see your points here on the credit bureaus. what really surprises me is that thee are only three reliable ones. With it being such a big business you would think more and more comapnies would appear trying to cash into the dough. Why are there only three?

Sat, 12/06/2008 - 15:42 Permalink

cody, I know you can not give a real hard price, but can you put at least a scale here as to what it would cost people in different people in different scenarios. I am really curious on what it would take to clean up a credit report.

Doc has a website on credit repair that sounds resonable Good Natured. I believe Doc even knows what a great person Cody is. Guess the give each other competion. I still haven't seen the repair cowboy leave any prices..did you try checking out his website?

Sun, 12/07/2008 - 22:43 Permalink

I don't know Cody... I know his boss... His boss is definitely a GREAT guy...

From what I know about their stuff, they charge anywhere from about $650 up... You pay some up front, and then the balance is paid out over about 6 mos... Don't quote me, though... That's a rough estimate...

Their fees are higher than ours, but I can definitely promise that the "naysayers" would be pleased to know that these guys are not one of the "boogey-men" that give my industry a bad name...

I regularly hear complaints from other companies' clients, but never from Cody's... Nor do I think they have ever heard of any from mine...

Mon, 12/08/2008 - 20:41 Permalink

Cody hasn't been looking well to people here because he didn't really post til lately and anyone who had abything to say about him was always pretty much a one time guest. Kind of made him look bad.
Gn I am ssuming Doc has cheaper rates..if your serious why not inquire about it. You could "pm" him on this site and discuss it. I know you have been working hard on your credit and maybe you could get a great price and the experience..then come here and tell us how it worked for you. Just an idea.

I think you 'nailed it', CODY. 'We' DON'T know which ones are legit or not. I don't want to give companies money out of my pocket and not see ANY resiults. I'm not saying that YOU do that, but, after SOOO many 'negative' reports on alot of them, you can't blame people, on this forum, for being a bit sceptical..can you?

I was reading an article in the readers about debt settlement companies and how to figure out whos good and bad. I thought wow this wholesituation must be getting out of hand when this magazine runs an article like this. I believe though some one told me their is a big differnce in repair companies and debt settlement companies. Maybe someone could spell out what makes them so different.

Unless you are a complete idiot who has trouble reading then there is nothing a credit repair company can do for you that you can't do for yourself. Asking a rep from a credit repair company if they can help raise your credit score is kinda like asking the barber if you need a hair cut. I'll even go a step further and tell you how to do it yourself. (Credit repair scammers are crapping in their pants right now) It is very simple. I raised my own score by about 50 points and I started with pretty good credit (670). Okay here is step by step what you need to do.
1) Get a credit report from all 3 agencies.
2) Locate all negative items ie. late pmnts, chargeoffs, collections etc..
3) It doesn't matter if they are correct or not DISPUTE THEM. Some credit reporting agencies let you do this right on line some others make you write to the company yourself but either way DISPUTE THEM.
Thats it not to hard. Even if you get one negative off of your report your score will go up a ton. So there it is don't be stupid and pay someone your hard earn money to do the three easy steps I just described. Really it is truly not that hard to raise your score.

Tue, 02/17/2009 - 00:19 Permalink

Yes, I agree with Jason. You can do whatever the credit repair companies can do to improve your credit score. The most interesting fact is that even the FTC in its official website also recommends to repair your own credit. Doing this not only saves your money which would have otherwise gone as fees to the credit repair companies, but also helps you learn the basics of credit.

Tue, 02/17/2009 - 09:16 Permalink

Negative items can only be removed from your credit report only if they are not correct. All correct information stays in your report for seven years and six months from the date of your first delinquency towards the debt. However, negative information like hard inquiry can stay in your report for two years and bankruptcy may stay in your report for ten years. If you find a hard inquiry listing in your credit report, you can send a letter to the inquirer asking them to verify your authorization or remove it from your report. You can find sample letters if you visit the link letters of credit

I have to respectfully disagree with DOC and what he says about getting to a credit score of around 820.

I'm not sure what my credit score was, but back in the 90's i had numerous credit cards, including department store ones (yikes! - they have the highest interest rates), and i made frequent late payments. as well as late payments on utility company bills. and i had never held a job for longer than about 3 or 4 years (never fired, just wanted more opportunity), being paid at hourly rates. I was always stressed out about money, and couldn't have been a good credit risk. then in about 2002 (after a job loss related to 9/11/01 that lasted about 8 months) i decided to reel it in, learn as much as i could about getting a handle on my credit habits. I got a 3 yr debt consolidation loan at around 18% (which was lower than my highest cc rates) from a credit union, pd off my highest rate credit cards and closed those accounts (mainly the department store cards). then i took what i had been paying on those cards and applied that to the ones still open (about 3 cards at that time), making payments of at least twice the minimum payment. Paid the loan off in 1 1/2 yr. I made the effort to deposit at least $10 - $25 in savings with each paycheck. all the while i tried really hard to curb my spending as well. i made it a game to see how much i could 'pay myself', and indeed the savings started building up (i have about zero in savings). but i always paid credit off first, because why pay interest when i could eventually have that money for myself.

from 2002 to today - i've paid all my credit cards to zero (2 cards only now), paid off all other debt (medical bills mostly) and now have a decent savings. this was very beneficial to me when in 2008 I became unemployed by my employer going out of business. I've had a part time hourly job only for a few months, but just today when I decided to take out a loan to make a big, life-changing purchase - I found I have a credit score of 820. and I'm barely into my 40's in age.

This wasn't magic. This was a very direct effort to educate myself, and to pay myself with my hard earned paychecks rather than give it away to creditors, and to reduce my financial stress. and it took a few years. they don't say 'patience is a virtue' for nothing. honestly - if I can do it, anyone can. because I never thought I could, but I'm living proof.

so good luck to anyone who decides to do this - just keep telling yourself you can do it!

I know MY credit score has gone up. I've applied for a CC ($200.00 limit) and received it..with only 9% on it!! Also...I was accepted for a Fingerhut CC. A few years ago, I applied for Fingerhut and was denied. So...I'm feeling pretty 'positive' about my credit now. Yeah...we can all improve our credit ourselves by paying down the debts that we already have.
