I just received a letter from a CA, trying to settle an old account. I checked Equifax, and it is not on my credit report. I'm sure that this is an old debt that is at least 8 years old, which is out of SOL where I live (California - 4 years) and where the debt was accrued (Georgia - 6 years)
I still need to check the other 2 credit agencies, but quite positive that I won't find it on there either.
My question: In your opinion should I send them a debt validation letter? Or should I ignore it? I don't want to pay them because once I do, I'm pretty sure that it will go back on my credit report and affect it adversely.
Since the SOL period in your state has already expired, so you don’t need to pay them an extra dime. Simply ignore them and send them a Cease and Desist letter in writing via certified mail with a return receipt request. After that if they are still trying to contact you, file a complaint against them to the SAG or FTC.
