My account has been assigned to a collection agency. It is my wife's account. I’m thinking of working with a debt lawyer. Will it be better to work with a debt relief company?

Welcome to the forums!!!
I don’t think so. Don’t hire a debt relief company as they charge a heavy fee. Try to negotiate with the CA on your own and if possible set up a payment arrangement with them.

Check with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling who can point you toward a true not-for-profit organization in your own community. A true not-for-profit will charge a nominal fee (And I mean nominal) up front and no more.

Here in Missouri Consumer Credit Counseling Services is the best organization. They will be up-front about what they can and can't do. Often creditors will work with them when they won't work with an individual.

Good luck.

Best thing to do is get something out on hire puhscare, (it doesn't have to be expensive) just make sure you already have the money to pay for it all. Then pay it back in only a couple of months rather than a year or two. Do this a few times and you're credit report will show that your able to service your credit and pay it back earlier. This is helpful especially if your going to apply for a fairly big loan like a mortgage in the future.
