I bought a car from Toyota Motor Credit that shows a date open of 10/1/2001, the status in my Experian credit report, that I subscribe to through freecreditreport, shows "Paid, was a charge-off".
It is now 11/19/2008, Well over 7yrs later, and it has not been removed yet. What can I do to have this removed without paying some fly by night law firm to do it for me.
FYI: This is the only instance on any of my credit reports about this car loan.

Since seven years has already expired, the charge off listing should go off your credit report. You need not pay them anything to remove the charge off from your report. All you need to do is to send a dispute letter to Experian and ask them to remove the listing from your credit report. The experian will review the listing and get it removed. Generally, the charge off listing stays on your credit report for seven years from the date you missed the first payment. However, you have not told us clearly when you have first missed your payment. If the first missed date was Oct 01, then the listing should go out of your report by now. However, if first missed payment was after Oct 2001, then it will stay in your report for seven years from the date of the initial missed payment.
Both Mary and Justin are correct. I have seen at times that it will actually take 7.5 years to fall off. I have a couple on my report and they are exactly 7.5 years before they fall off. On your report it should list a fall off date for this debt. If the date listed has past contact the reporting agency (experian) and dispute it. You can also look at your report and under activity you should be able to see the last date that you made a payment..count 7 years from that date.

From your credit report, it is seen that you made the last payment for the month of Sept 01 and discontinued after that. This last payment is sixty days late. This means that you have made your last payment somewhere in November 01 and so the charge off will remain in your account for seven years starting from Nov 01. So you can expect the charge off to go out of your experian report by the end on November 08.
I think that Carol is right. KD i.e key derogatory which means that the account is reported as delinquent to the credit bureaus in Dec 01. They might have charged off the debt in Dec 01 itself. However, the negative listing will stay in your credit report for seven years from the date of your first missed payment or your last payment. In this case your last payment was on Nov 01 and your last missed payment was for the month of Sept 01. I think that the other two bureaus might have considered the last missed payment on Sept 01 and has already removed it, while Experian has considered the date of your last payment and is going to remove it by Nov 08. However, if they do not remove it from your report by Nov 08, you can send a dispute letter to Experian telling them that you do not agree with the listing and ask them to remove it from the credit report.
