Hi everyone. I'm getting myself confused over recommendations for how to handle some old medical debts. I've three items showing up on my credit report each for about $250. They all have dates opened and placed for collection in 2006. Paying that in full isn't a problem, but if possible I'd like to get them off the reports. What's the best course of action in this situation?
Approach for old-ish medical debts
Welcome to the forums!!!
If you have enough money to pay it in full, then do it at first. Usually negative items remain on your credit report for 7 years from the date of your first default. After repaying the debts in full, you can make a written request to your collectors to remove these items from your credit report. But it depends on their discretion whether or not to accept your request. You can also request them to update your account status as “Paid-in-full†after repaying the full debts.
Thanks Sally! This would be the GW letter approach, yes? Is it more effective than the DV and PTD letters approqch others are recommending?
