My husband claims that if we miss paying our student loans that it does not affect our credit - is this true. Because we have pretty good credit and I don't want to mess it up.

Well i dont believe its true, i just pulled a few credit reports and all mine had listed a few months back in 2008 when I went 30 days late so they do report monthly.

yes....student loans are on CR's. Whether you are in a 'good' status on them or you have been late with payments. I've had student loans for a while now. All in 'good' status. A student loan...is just that..a loan of some kind.

No, this is not true. Late payments always have a negative impact on your credit score. It hurts your credit score by 35%. Late payment is treated as a negative item, which in turn may affect your credit score adversely. Although you have a good credit score, but this late payment may drop your credit score by certain points.

True....late payments, of any kind, DO effect your credit score. However....some Student loan lenders (I've dealt with a few..) give you that 'window' of a few days after your payment is originally due, to make the payment without impacting your credit. Also..I believe loans from private lenders/Federal Student loans have their own 'standards' on this. You may have to talk to your lender and see what they say.

You don't want to go into 'default' with Student loans, either. If they go into 'default', you would not qualify for any kind of Grants, assistance, etc. The more late payments you make on your loans, the worse your credit score can get.
