I recently received a letter from a CA requesting payment. This acct was my late mother's and is over 6 years old. After research, I find out the acct had nsf. How should I handle this?

First you'll need to check if this debt is past the SOL. If it's past the SOL then you might help reset the SOL clock if you make a single payment.
