Disputing a settled in full account?

I sent pay to delete letters our to some collection agencies without realizing it doesn't work with them and old with the original account holder.

However, I did receive a few letters back saying they'd take the settlement and mark my account as settled in full. They said I then had to get a copy of my credit report and dispute it saying that I paid it. The companies would then verify with the CA that it was paid and it would be removed that way.

But, everything I am reading online says it is extremely hard to be removed when marked like that. Is this true?

I sent out those letters too. The creditors said they don't delete accounts, and other ones just sent the letters back return to sender like I was bugging them. Even after I paid the collection agencies in full, associated with them, the collection agencies gave me" Paid in Full" letters with the original creditors on it, saying it would be updated on the report as "paid in full", but the collection agencies removed their account totally and only some of the creditors put "paid after charge off" on it. One of them left it" as is" as though I didn't pay anything, and when I called them they said that is how the account was when they closed it and I didn't pay them. But when I called to pay them, they said it was sold and they had no more to do with it. But to me, if it was sold then it should be ) balance because that means it was paid...by somebody. This is the company the collection agency had that I paid in full. The account was from 2005 and they said I owed $737 and I paid it and it didn't mean anything. The original creditor still has it up there like I still owe them.
