I am being sued in small claims court over a credit card i had many years ago. The original lawsuit was suppossed to be sometime in 2009 but due to a few moves and reopening of the judgment it is just coming up for trial in april. the original credit card was for 650.00 i had payment protection at the time and became unemployed. because i did not collect unemployment ( i was young and didnt know that i could) they denied my claim. The law firm (not sure if they are acting on behalf of the credit card company or if they now own my debt wont settle for any less than $1300 which is ridiculous. any advice on how i can handle this?? the original debt is scheduled to come off my credit report next year and i dont want a judgment against me to ruin my credit for 7 years. ive tried everything. An attorney said its not worth it for me to hire them because it could cost more than what they feel i should settle for and a debt counseling firm wont touch it because im not in huge amounts of debt.

the thing is they want more than a thousand dollars than what the balance was on the card i dont really think its fair.
