I have a private student loan that has now frozen all my accounts. I am looking for a job so all of the money is my husbands. He gets VA benefits in addition to his paycheck. A judgment was served and I had worked out payment arrangements with them but told them I was trying to find a job so it would be really hard for me to even pay them that amount. The total loan was around 3000 originally. I haven't received any correspondence on the balance since I have resumed payments so I don't really know what the balance is now. I live in North Carolina. I had read somewhere that NY has a law that only allows above a certain amount but didn't see that here. I did not fill out the exemptions form last year when it was sent because I worked out payment arrangements. My mortgage and light bills are due and we are struggling to make it as it is. Is there anything that I can do? I already called the attorneys for the creditors and she was going to offer them half of my taxes (again the only reason I get that is my husbands income). We have no means to get food, gas, or to pay the bills. What recourse do I have now(if any?) Thank you for any advice I can get here! Also, if they agree to the taking half of my taxes, how long before the accounts will be unfrozen? My mortgage is due on Monday (at the latest) and my lights will be turned off on Friday if my funds aren't freed up....YIKES!

See, I don't think any consolidation co. would be willing to work with you till you find a job. Try going for about any kind of job that you can do. I don't think it's time for you to pick-n-choose. It could be a bigger problem if the debt burden increases and you ultimately need to consider bankruptcy - I just don't want you to go for it! It takes a hit on your credit score.
