I checked my credit report online today and was surprised to see a $15K+ negative item reported from my County Court stating "State Tax Lien filed" in 2003. I have paid all my taxes (some years a bit late) and have never received any notice from any place that I owed this kind of money or that a court action was initiated so I could have a chance to defend myself. Any suggestions for resolving it?
I also have about 7 collection items from medical offices ranging from $75 to $425 dating back to 2005 & 2006. Most of them are with a single collection agency. I know I have paid some of these directly to medical offices and can get them cleared. Any recommendations for the remainder? Should I contact those medical offices to settle or the collection agencies? Do they go off my report if they are settled or do they remain there?
Thank you in advance.
I think you need to research this. it could be a mistake.
as far as the medical stuff goes you should does some hippa research.

State tax lien
Thank you for the advice. I'll check out both. It is a lesson learned that keeping a watch on my credit history is our responsibility and that court actions can take place without our knowledge or opportunity to present our case.
State Tax Lien - demystified but still there
Going through my tax records, I found out that in 2003 my state Department of Revenue sent me a notice that I owed them $15K+ from 1997 for taxes and shortly thereafter filed in the County Court. I responded to the state DOR with documentation proving I didn't owe them that amount. They sent a corrected document and a refund of about $1K but failed to notify the County Court that they were mistaken. This is what has left that State Tax Lien on my credit report (and probably on my home). I am going to call them in the morning and see how quickly I can get them to move to make the correction.
The moral of the story is: I must check my credit report regularly AND it is my responsibility to follow up and make sure erroneous information is removed.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL OF CREDIT CARD COUNCILING COMPANIES. They will not make your payments on time and they will make your crdeit worse. When you apply for a mortgage they will consider this a Bankruptcy. It sort of depends on what you would like to do. Rather than paying off collections and chargeoffs it is better to make all your payments on time and keep all your balances below 50% of your high crdeit limit. If you would just like to pay off the collections to keep them from calling and sending letters then go ahead but helping your crdeit score? It will not help your score that much.
