I would go through non profit credit counseling instead of one of those "consolidation" companies. they usually take your money and apply it to their fees for the first 6 months and pay nothing on your bills. Then they ask the debts to settle and if the people you owe money too say no, you're screwed. You are better off trying to settle yourself.
