Collections on accounts not mine

Hi,

I am a college student and have been trying to get a credit card for a year but was always rejected :(

Last year I found out that there are 2 collections on my credit. One for $2500 and one for $5700. However, surprisingly enough I never had a single credit card till date. Since last year I have been calling the credit bureaus and have been trying to dispute these items.

Is it possible for me to sue the collection agencies for providing the credit bureau wrong information of me? And can you refer me to a lawyer?

Thank you

Hi Gorman,

You have mentioned that you have never had a credit card. However, you have credit report. That means that you have atleast some type of credit accounts. Now, check if all these accounts are positive. If not you should try to pay off the debts, and ask the creditors to update the paid status.

As for the collection accounts, send debt validation letters to the collection agencies through certified mail, requesting a return receipt. If this debt is not yours they won't be able to validate it. You can then dispute these items off your credit report. Also, if you want to sue you should get help from a lawyer.

In order to get a new credit card you need to have a clean credit report and a good credit score. I think you can now try to get a secured credit card to improve your credit score. Obtain the card from one such company reporting to all the three credit bureaus. Then use the card to make small purchases and then make on-time payments on the card. Secured cards are easily available.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Aaron

stop calling on the phone. Don't hire an attorney right now. Credit repair can be done by you in writing. you will spend some money on postage but I believe you will have success.

do you have all your credit reports?
what state are you in?
what is the original creditor and the name of the CA?
what is the date of first delinquency? 30 days after last payment
