Forums
First, I'd like to thank everyone who contributes to the forum. I found this forum through a Google search and have been reading since yesterday and I'll be applying some of the knowledge gained.
Here's my situation:
Yesterday a lady from a collection agency called and told me that I had a $2700 bill with a utility company in NY. Now, I have visited new york and my daughters father lives there. I asked them for the address where the bill is from and they gave me his address. He however has denied using my information to set up services at his home. I want to dispute this bill. I have proof that I haven't been living in NY during the time the bill was being accumulated. I need to know what actions I should be taking.
collection agency
Hi azb,
Welcome to this community and thanks for the compliment :)
Immediately send a debt validation letter to this collection agency through certified mail, requesting a return receipt. Keep ready all kinds of proofs to dispute this with the credit bureaus. Check your credit report and find out if this item is listed their on your credit report. Find out information on the original creditor. Then find out with the original creditor when this account was opened, and all other details.
You need to find out all of these details to dispute this.
Thanks,
Aaron
Should I file a police report against my daughters' father? He had to do this and had to have knowledge of the bill, he lives at the address. Someone told me that should be my first step then contact the Coned( the utility company) and advise them of the situation. If I can work with them, can I send a cease and desist order to the collection agency?
yes, file a police report.
police report
Hi azb,
Yes, I completely agree with cinnamngrl. You should file a police report immediately.
Thanks,
Aaron
