I incurred a judgement against me from a national retail credit card account in 1996. Several months ago, this judgement was being deducted from my check. How is it possible or why is this happening? I thought there was some statute of limitations concerning garnishments. It seems very odd to me that they would start garnishing my check after such a long time. I have worked at the same job for over 10 years and nothing credit wise has changed for me. HELP

Hi mitchmccollum,

Welcome to this community :)

There are Statute of Limitations (SOL) on judgments. Let me know the state you live in because the statute varies according to the states. If the SOL on a judgment has expired your account cannot be garnished. However, judgments can be renewed before the expiry.

Thanks,

Aaron

Although there will be a statute of limitations for judgments in all states, most are renewable for several periods of 5 years or so and can be extended for 20 years plus
