I did not know there was two different measures. I actually never heard of the Credit utilization. It does make sense. Thanks for the information. I like when there are new things to learn here. You always give valuable advice and information.

Facts:

I owed Capital One in 2004 aboyt $3,000.

I was served to be sued by Esknos and Adler for Capital One. I did not respond.

At that time in 2004 I owned a home

I sold the home immediatley after being served

I assumed it went to deafual judgement

Research into County Records shows an Abstract of Judgment in the County records

I have never been approached (not that I could be found) for garnishment, etc..

The judgment is NOT ON ANY CREDIT AGENNCY

Weird?

To protect yourself from falling victim to a credit repair scam, you have to stand for your rights as a consumer. You should familiarize yourself with the Credit Repair Organizations Act, which offers you some substantial rights and protections. The Act specifies that credit repair firms must inform you of your rights and obligations before you can sign a binding contract with them. They are also prohibited from extracting their fee from you before they have provided the services they were contracted to perform.

Hope it serves you the purpose.

I did everything I was told to do and disputed my credit report and tried to clean stuff up and it ended up dropping my score by 62 points! UNBELIEVABLE and the "so called" investigation the 3 credit bureaus did was not thorough or complete. I'm disgusted with this system. As for freecreditreport.com, that is a joke also. It is not worth the money. It gives you alerts, but no details. I am going to lose the home I want to buy for me and my children because of all this. I will NEVER listen to an attorney about disputing my credit report again. I will take this on myself and work it out on my own. What a waste of 3 months and $400.00 worth of payments and payoffs.

Hi Lisa,

Can you give more details on your credit? Can you tell whether there were any old collection accounts? Paying off old accounts can lower your score.

Thanks,

Aaron

i thought about hiring a company to fix my credit but after much advice from others i decided to go at it myself...more because i did not have the 800 and some dollars it would have cost..

Hi vfsalinas,

Yes, if you can manage credit on your own, then there is no need to join a credit counseling agency. Managing credit is not that tough. You need to make a list of all your credit cards, loans, and bills, along with the payment dates, and outstanding balances. Maintain on time payments, and tick off the one paid.

Along with these, you also need to set up an emergency fund, which you can use in time of emergencies to pay off your cards, and bills. Another very important thing you should do in credit/debt management is check your credit report at least once in three months.

Thanks,

Aaron

Thanks for the good advice...I have recently started forcing myself to start saving...(for a cruise to the Bahamas) = ) but I do realize I need a general savings plan. Money is tight right now because I am working my way through school and paying off a student loan and paying for two homes...I just need to manage my money wisely and set money aside immediately for savings....I have started considering signing up with my credit card account to receive a copy of my credit report every month since I am working to repair my credit...I love this site, it has been a tremendous help for me...Thanks!

I have not read many good things about credit repair companies on here, where would you go to check it out and see if they are a good company to use or not?

You can choose a good credit repair company by following these steps.

1. Ask them what they have done for their previous clients and ask for evidence to support their claims.
2. Find out whether they charge a reasonable fee.
3. Talk to people who have been with a credit company before and were happy with their services.
4. Ask for their state registration and bond certificates. Verify them with required public information from Secretary of the State.
5. Find out, how long they are in business. If they are in business for long, it means that they have been able to offer good services to people.

In my experience with Credit Repair Co's, (the ones I've dealt with, anyway), they want upfront-fees to "make sure they 'fix' your credit." I actually had a 'repair Co tell me this!! There ratings were good....however......the more I talked to them, the more 'red flags' were coming up. I've learned, from several people, on this Forum, that you CAN repair your own credit. And..you're not paying someone to do it!!

All i know is that my Girl Friend payed In Charge almost $9000 and got basically nothing in return. I didnt see any of her correspondence between them but i know she payed the money and still has tons of collection items on her Credit Report.

Hi foreverandever,

It is always better to check the reliability of the company (any, may it be a credit repair service, or debt settlement company, or debt consolidation company) in the market, and it's accreditation with the Better Business Bureau.

Again, sometimes all these fails. It can happen that a consumer may be satisfied with the services of that company, while some may not be satisfied with the services of that same company.

Thanks,

Aaron

tracyrains, you can't say whether a company is a scam or real. It depends. Not all companies are helpful. You need to check out if at all the company you are going to take help from is at all a real and legal one.

Never trust a credit repair company that asks you to pay before they render the service. This is a common scam – the so-called “company” takes your money, never gets back to you, and conveniently vanishes without a trace when people begin to complain

Hi,

Yes, this is very true. One should avoid credit repair agencies asking for upfront fees. It is also important to check if the agency is accredited with the Better Business Bureau.

Thanks,

Aaron

There are many reputable credit repair companies in existence today, there are also many scams being perpetrated on unsuspecting consumers. Like most credit scams, credit repair scams prey on those people who are feeling desperate and willing to believe even unreasonable promises.

Tue, 08/31/2010 - 12:13 Permalink

Hi,

One should always avoid a agency asking for upfront fees. One can also consult his friends ans relatives about a credit repair agency.

Thanks,

Aaron

can some one here give me some details about that what is difference between repair and rebuild credit?

Tue, 10/05/2010 - 09:51 Permalink

I don't think all credit repairs are scams. You don't have to go to a debt consolidator company, you can also check with bankruptcy offices, and sometimes they offer consolidation and repair plans to avoid bankruptcy.

Credit repair is getting most common and highly essential these days.
Most of the credit repair services makes false notes these days. So be cautious while going for such services.

Credit repair has unfortunately earned a reputation and a fraudulent industry. Far too many unscrupulous entrepreneurs took advantage of the emerging popularity of credit repair.

'CGEORGE'....( I know this is an older post)......I think you're right. Alot of the "expert" credit counselers do want to make a fast buck. I was invloved with a so-called credit repair company. To make a long story short their "fees", every month, seemed to be more and more. Soon, I was realizing I was going MORE into debt with them. Not good!! Thanks for the website.

Sat, 01/14/2012 - 15:34 Permalink

Well..I looked at the website above. I may find a "ton of information to do it myself", but, there is a fee to the book/PDF. and..I refuse to pay for 'free' information.

I can't speak for all companies that offer credit repair, but I can say without a doubt that DSI Solutions is a SCAM! They don't even actually send out the letters that they say they do, and their customer service is a joke. Very rude and unprofessional, they just want your money. Steer clear. Anyone that comes on here and says DSI Solutions is the way to go is either an employee or an affiliate of that company.

All of debt settlement copemnias are scams. They promise the world but can't deliver after taking your money. When we got those debt settlement letters while I worked at credit union, we just disregarded it. We would then contact the member giving them information on consumer credit counseling a national non profit organization. They work with creditors to reduce payments and interest rate. If member wasn't interested in doing that we forwarded for legal action.

Forget credit reapir companies. Most are pure scam. Even the legit ones only do what you can easily do yourself. There are no special letters or secret procedures to clean up your credit.Get a copy of your credit report (AnnualCreditReport.com). If there are errors, dispute them with the credit bureau. Legitimate negative items age off your credit report 7-1/2 years from the date of first deficiency. The older the item, the less impact on your score. If any of your derogatory items are single entry items, like medical or utility bills, you can try to negotiate pay for delete agreements (you pay $x and they remove the item) with the collection agencies. This doens't work for regularly reported items like credit cards and installment loans. The collection agency can only remove what they report. The original creditor's charge off would remain. If you have open credit card accounts, use them and pay off the balance in full every month. If you don't have a credit card, get one, even if you have to get a secured card you pay a deposit which is held as collateral against the line of credit. You need to build up at least 24 months of consistent, on time payment history to improve your score.

You have a credit ratnig but it will be extremely low. The defaults will show for the next 6 years from the date they were issued. You can apply to add a note to your credit ratnig, saying that the debt was satisfied have a search on the Motley Fool website for advice on this.My advice would be to stay away from credit repair agencies. there is very little they can do, it's a matter of time. Basically, you won't be getting any credit for a good while unless it's at a very high rate of interest or from dodgy sources.
