is there anything I can do about a pesky student loan on education I didn't get?

I attended a school for ultrasound technology in Houston and was able to get grants and loans to pay for my $25,000 tuition, however in the last semester there I failed ONE of my classes and was refused the ability to retake the class so I could finish my 2 yr associates degree.

I tried to transfer out and finish up, but no other schools 'recognized' the credits I had already finished and was told over and over I would have to START OVER and pay AGAIN for the same education I already had.

It's going on 10 yrs and I still owe $7,500 working a mediocre job. I have a mortgage and truck note along with other bills and I feel this one is uncoming being so I didn't benefit from it and I do NOT have a job in the field I went to school for.

student loans are guaranteed by the federal government, but they never go away.

I am sorry that seem to giving you depressing advice

Hi Suadee,

Welcome to this community :)

Can I know what kind of a student loan is it? Is it a private student loan or a government one? cinnamngrl, if this is a private student loan, then it will come under the Statute of Limitations (SOL). There is no SOL on Government student loan, but SOL applies on the private ones.

So, if this is a private student loan, you need not worry. The SOL must have expired till date. However, if this is a Federal one, you can try student loan forgiveness program. In Student loan forgiveness, all or some part of your loan is forgiven on the basis of your voluntary work like teaching, or joining the military, or joining as a medical student.

Thanks,

Aaron

it started out as a government loan, but I had it consolidated with AES (American Education Services)

I have subsidized and un-subsidized loans with them. I have them on forbearance right now, but that will be up soon and will have to start paying on them again.

I have a Student Loan, through AES, as well. Nope..no SOL on this loan. Seems like I've had it 'forever'!!LOL However...it's not in default (thank goodness). Just wondering..have you talk ed to them about a 'Hardship' program they have? I KNOW AES has them because I've been on that certain program before. They have a few other options you can do, as well. PLEASE let me know your 'update'. I DO have to say that AES isn't bad to work with. They give you every option they can, to help you.
