Reopening a debt

I had an account with a company in 2002 and owed them money, but needless to did not pay the bill, as I understand it that should have been removed off my credit report after 7yrs. Well I just got a copy of my report and it shows that I opened the account 7yrs later with them and have not paid. Can they do that? I would tend to think not, I didn't even live at the address the have list anymore. If they can't or shouldn't be doing this what are my Legal options here?
Thanks for any advice

Hi Hispoptart,

Welcome to this community :)

Can you tell what is the status of these accounts on your credit report, and the date of last payment, and the state you live in? Re-aging of debt is considered to be illegal, if done without the consent of the debtor. Thus, you can dispute this with the credit bureaus. Attach proof of your last payment date with the dispute letter.

Thanks,

Aaron

Thank you for your response Aaron , status is collection acct. I bought a cell phone but never made a payment so there is no payment history. I opened the acct in 2002 in Ca. The credit report is showing I opened it in 2009 at the same address I origanly opened the acct at, but I have lived in CO since 2006.
