I have a collections on my account that I am not sure is mine. It is 5 years old, I have never receive any bills, The name of the orginal collector (medical) I have not heard of. If I request a copy of the original invoice from the CA does that change the activity date?

You should send a proper debt validation letter to the collection agency(CA). You will find a sample of a debt validation letter in the Letters of Credit section. The CA should validate the debt within 30 days. In case you actually owe the debt, try to negotiate. It is sometimes possible to settle for an amount, that is 40-60% less than the actual debt amount.

If you ask for a debt validation, the CA should be able to provide you with the original invoice. Asking for the invoice does not change the activity date. But if you actually owe the debt, you should check if it is within the SOL period. SOL depends on the state you live in. Making any kind of payment after the SOL period is over, will cause it to restart. In case you do not owe the debt, you should dispute it with the credit bureaus and remove it from you credit report.

Send the DV letter to the address on your credit report.
