Asset Acceptance recently validated one of my debts and before I sent them a settlement letter I looked them up on a state run website to see if they were licensed to collect. To my surprise they weren't!
What are some possible next steps I can take? Do I ask them for proof that they can legally collect from me? Can they collect without a license?
You can print off a copy of the information that you found, you can also confirm that they are not licensed to collect with your state attorney generals office and send them the information from them also.
I am sure if you check back here that there will be others that come and offer you advice also on what to do.
I sent them a letter pointing them to the state website I used. I asked for hard copies of information that allows them to collect. We'll see what they say and I'll keep you updated.
