Send a debt validation letter to the collection agency and wait till they validate your debt. If they do it, then you can work out a debt negotiation plan. Otherwise do not pay a penny till they can validate. If they cannot validate the debt and still pursue you, then file a complaint against the CA to the State Attorney General.
I agree with Justin send the validation letter first. Then file a complaint to the State Attorney General. It seems this has happened to more than one person. So if all of you end up filing a complaint I'm sure something will get done.
