My friend used to live with me but last year he was deported to his country Germany and owed $5,000 to a credit card card comany., two weeks ago a collection agency or a credit card company left a message on my answering machine for my friend to contact them by 1:00 pm otherwise they will persue to the court to get jusdgement against him. My question is that what they can do if a person is no more in the country since he was deported due to illegal stay.
Note: My phone number was provided to a credit card company when my friend applied for a credit card.
If he does nto respons thatwill go on his credit report and if he happnes to coem back he will have hard time cleanign up his credit
Also now a days credit reports are shared and are also avilabe for banks in other countires and if the country your frind is living now has this in place, he will have diffculty in gettign any credit cards or loan in that country
Hi Sandra,
Well, a creditor cannot bother you, if are not a cosigner in any of your friend's credit accounts. As far as your deported friend's debt is concerned, I am afraid a country can collect debt and even get a judgment against your friend who has been deported to another country. Basically, it is a long procedure since it depends on the country whether or not it will allow some collection agency from outside to collect debt. It is not only time consuming but also expensive. In case the CA wants to get a judgment, it must approach the US Embassy present in the other country and ask for legal representation. However, this is a rare incident. The CAs normally do not go to that extent, since it requires time and money.
