My boyfriend has an eviction record; however, we did qualify for an apartment since he showed proof that he payed his share of the rent for the apartment he shared with his cousin. Ok, so he has that. Then he had some credit card debt, but he was able to get it all payed off and now is building credit on a new credit card that he now pays for on a monthly basis. Next up is some unpaid electricity and cable bills... ugh
I have good credit, will this hurt me if we get married? Should I pay this all off for him and will that even help his credit?
Hi Lindsay,
Well, if you can pay his debts for him that will definitely improve his credit but will make no difference in your credit history. Getting married to a person does not mean that you share his debts. Your marriage has got nothing to do with your boyfriend's credit history. Only, if you are a co-signer in his credit, his bad credit score might affect you otherwise not. However, if you wish to help him by paying off his debts, you can go ahead.
