If an unpaid (originial) account was sold to a collection agency, is it possible to remove the original account off of my credit, since it's now showing that it's in collections?
No, it will stay on there along with every company that it is sold to, so you could have countless entries for the same account. The good news is that they all only count as one. They just look really bad to us, but a creditor will see them as just one.
