Someone used a Gap credit card in my name (that I think I took out to get a discount, and would never use) for $79 three years ago. That bill is now $300 with debt collectors. How do I fix this?

You need to act fast. Quickly call your credit card company and let them know about the identity theft and request them to really narrow your credit limit. Usually if you report within 2 days of an incident your loss can be limited to $50 by the company. After 60 days your loss will be limited to $500 and beyond that you will be responsible for the total amount spent.
Report an identity theft immediately.
