Is a credit card issuer required to notify you if they charge off your account? I got a debt collection notice from a collection agency, but no notice from the credit card issuer that my account was charged off. I was late on my payments, but not over 90 days.

Hi darweese,

As far as I know, credit card companies do not inform before charging off an account. Cardholders regularly receive the billing statements, and once you are 180 days past due in making payments, you can already expect a charge off.

I was late on my payments, but not over 90 days.

Did you already pay off the account, after missing payments for 90 days? Or did the card issuer charge-off, before the accounts were 180 days past due? Whatever the case may be, you can contact your creditor to know the status of your accounts. You can also try to work out a deal with your creditor. You must request them to accept payments for the accounts, and in return remove the charge-off from your credit report.

Keep in touch
