To find the right card that suits your lifestyle, you will have to shop around for the best card offers. The best way is to fill out the online application forms and wait for the companies to reply. Once you start getting offers on your mail, you can choose the best out of them. It is very important to know the company policies before you select a card. The "fine print" will give you an idea about the terms and conditions applicable.
American Express is perhaps the largest U.S credit card company. I have an American Express Gold card. It has been about 5 years now I am using it. Around 2 months back I got a $100 gift card(in a reward program). I have heard of Blue cards from American Express. It has a 0% APR for the first 12 months. For each purchase by a Blue card you earn points. You can earn double points for purchase of few select merchandise.

If I apply online how long will it take for me to get the card. I do not have a credit caard now and as you know life is so difficult without it. Also, I have heard that they charge a lot of untoward charges even though you are not supposed to pay them. Is that true? I know people who are almost ruined under the debts of credit cards.
Finding the right card

If you apply within the business hours (that is 8am-8pm from Monday to Thursday and 8am-5pm on Friday) you can get an instant decision from the credit card company. However in some cases, the credit card companies may review your credit report in details, before agreeing to give you a card. In that case, it might take a few days time.
On the other hand if you apply online outside the business hours, card companies may contact you within 7 to 10 working days.

I agree with you that life is really difficult without credit card accounts. But as rachael said, you should be very careful before choosing a card. Credit card (CC) companies often give some attractive offers that don't last long. For instance, you take a card that offers 0% interest rate in the first year. The CC company may hike the rates to more than the usual, after the introductory period is over.
In my opinion, it is best to take a fixed low interest card, than a variable low interest card. To build a good credit history, you must use your credit accounts responsibly. Taking too much of unnecessary credit that you cannot repay, will spoil your chances of getting credit in future (when you actually require it).

It is true that credit card companies can add penalty charges, if you default on payments. They may also raise the interest rates without any prior notice. However you can now breathe easy, as there are some new credit card rules, which have already been signed into law by the President. The laws have protected the rights of the credit cardholders and will come into effect from July 2010.
