I have paid off most of my debt. I have 2 now that I am paying off. One will be done by May2009, but the other will take a year and the balance is about $3000.00. I also have a student loan that I pay $50.00 per month and still owe $450.00
I have 2 credit cards and a credit line and the total available credit between the 3 $1900.00. I pay them off every month.
My score is 631.
How do I get my score up while paying down my debt? How lond do the the settled accounts hurt my score?
I believe a third of the score is debt to credit ratio. Having $1,900 in available credit is fine if the your total credit is $2,500 (for example). However, if your avaible credit is 5,000 it is not so great.
Settled accounts are on your score for 7 years.

If you pay off the debts, the "amounts owed" factor that contributes 30% in your FICO score improves and so your credit score also improves. However, if you miss any payments and become delinquent, the credit score will decrease instead of increasing. Paying off the debt without making any missed payment not only improves the "amounts owed" factor but also builds up a good credit history.
If your account has been charged off by the creditor or you have been delinquent, then even after you pay off the debt, your credit score will not improve, because the negative item will not get removed from your credit report before seven years and six months of your delinquency. However if you pay off the debt, you can save yourself from judgment which the creditor might bring against you if you do not pay it off.

FICO score ranges between 350 to 850 and so if your score falls below 350 the FICO score shows as 0 by default. I don't think that you can get back your credit history again if it goes out of their records. All you need to do is to start rebuilding your credit history again using your existing credit cards and paying them off regularly within the due date.
