I have this medical bill that just recently went into collections. Question is, would it be better to contact the original creditor and send a pay for delete letter or is it too late and I have deal with the collection agency instead and send them the pay for delete letter. I'm not disputing the debt. I just want to get rid of it.
Hi
I have a question - Is both the original creditor as well as the collection agency listing there in your report? If both the names are listed in your report and the OC has sold off the debt to the collection agency, then you need to come to a pay for deletion agreement with the CA. Now if CA agrees to pay for deletion, only the CA listing will get removed from the credit report but not the OC listing. The OC listing will stay there in your report for seven years.
Yes, you need to send pay for deletion letter to the CA. Now before sending the letter to the CA, send a debt validation letter to check whether you actually owe the debt to the CA. If the CA validates the debt, you can come to pay for deletion agreement. The CA must provide you with the proof that the OC has sold off the debt to the CA and a copy of the original agreement papers between you and the OC. Always made the agreement in writing as a proof of the agreement in case the CA does not agree to remove the listing later after you pay off the debt.
