Stopping a Credit Reporting Agency from using SSN account #?

Is it possible to get a credit reporting agency to block a SSN that is used as an account number by a lender? A student loan company used my social security numbers as the account number, I have since closed the account and they refuse to change the number since it is closed. Is there any law that would help me ensure the account number is X'ed out when the report is requested?

I would google privacy acts, I know the laws that govern your privacy are pretty strict. Where I work we had to go to participant identification numbers to protect peoples privacy, that way they never have to use their social security number again. We are not covered under hippa at all, I would think there must be some law out there that protects you.

Go to the fair credit reporting page and see if there is something there.

Hi dawn
If the creditor has used your social security number as your credit account number, you need to send a letter to the credit bureaus by certified mail asking them not to show your account number so that you can avoid becoming a victim of identity theft. If they do not respond to your request, then file a complaint against the bureaus to the federal trade commission. I think they will take steps to ensure privacy of your social security number.
