Should you buy a new computer or just upgrade your old one. You may get more out of upgrading than buying. Our older computer got really slow and could not handle the updates. My husband and I added memory to ours and now it is as fast as our newer outdated computer. That computer only had 64 memory, we put 256 in it and it is like a new computer. It still has the windows Me on it and that is fine with us, my other computer has Windows XP and frankly for what we use them for, it does not make a bit of difference. We are not using it for office equipment, mainly to go online. Some small maintenance tips if your computer starts to slow down.
1. Clean up your cookies and temporary internet files, you can do this by clicking on the tools button at the top while you are online. It will drop down, choose internet options, you will then get a pop up screen, from there you can click delete cookies, delete temporary internet files and delete history, this will take all the junk that is stored from your surfing habits.
2. Defrag your computer, as you use your computer you move things around and then when you go on again, your computer has to go searching for those files to make the operation work properly. If you could picture walking into a huge file room where everything is in order, you could go straight to the drawer you want and pull the file you want, easy to find and making the job a lot quicker and easier. Now imagine going into a file room where files are just scattered everywhere, that is what your computer is like after about four hours of being online. Defragging will put everything back where it needs to be, making your computer operate more efficiently. This is a simple task to do also.
Go to the start menu, hit programs, go to accessories, then to defragmentation, click on it. Tell it to defrag your computer. If you have not done this in a while get ready for a long wait, so do it when you are not going to use the computer for a while, you can do this over night if you want. I do mine about every three days, so it does not take more than ten minutes, but I have went longer periods and had to wait longer. So if you make this a habit at least once a week, you will maximize the performance of your computer.
One more thing, demagnetize your screen every now and then, you should have a button on the front of the monitor for this.
Just some tips to keep you in good shape for being on the forums, nothing more annoying than a slow computer.
Goodnatured,
What a good post, I am going to do this to my computer, I will be one of the overnighters probably because I have not ever done it. Hopefully it will do as you say and speed it up.
I did start doing it, but it looks like it will take a while, it also ask me if I wanted to use a clean up disc, I did let it do that part and then cancelled the defrag until tonight, I have a feeling that it will take a while. I only have one computer, so I can not be on here and be defragging right? No, sense in making the computer chasing down files right, LOL. I just picture all these little people in this big warehouse trying to find what I need when I do a search or something on my computer, LOL.
I did find the magnetize button, you did not mention this, but I think it will help people locate it, it looks like an upside down horse shoe with a diagonal line across it, that is wild when you push it. How often do you recommend do this? Can you over do it?
This is a great technical post that some of us would have no clue that this stuff even existed or that we the normal user would know how to do it.
i dont think i want to invest in a new computor maybe upgrade the mother board unlessyour haveing other problems besides not haveing enough space mbs
It is really important to keep your computer cleaned up and in good running shape, it can be very frustrating when it freezes up on you or is running terribly slow, I thought this was a good post for us everyday folks to clean up and maintenance. I am going to start this on my computers at least weekly. I am looking forward to other posts like this goodnatured, so what ever you have that will help please post it. Great job.
This is GREAT advice Goodnatured.... I do this all the time and it really does help...
However, I have never heard of "demagnetize your screen...." before. How exactly do you do it and why?? I am interested in knowing this..
Sun
Good,
Great post again, you have put this out there in plain english, easy to understand, I have a new computer that will often get slow because I work quite a bit on it online and have a sister that also uses it for doing her online school work.
I think this is a good maintenance tool, again thank you.
im afraid to do any thing to my computor i dont know a lot about them only how to use them and thats limited.im trying to learn more but i hate to bother people and some of them act like your really dumb, which i am when it comes to computors. lol lol
I am defineately not a computer guru, but I think that you have explained it in simple enough terms good that I think that I could do it to my computer.
im not sure
Don’t fall for the hoaxes that pop up on your computer that tell you that they can fix your registry. They will want you to purchase unnecessary software, that almost high jack your computer and come on everytime you make a move on your computer. Constant scans, constant interruptions, if you have a descent anti virus on your computer, mine comes from my internet provider, they will take care of all of these problems for you. So don’t download this stuff, it is very hard to get off your computer once you have it on your computer.
Computers are not that scary Da, you just need to venture and do it. if someone gives the"you are dumb" look...look at him sheepishly and say you dont know. That does not matter at all. What matters is that you come to know about it.
Im really pretty dumb on the computor but i only took basic computor classes and i didnt have typeing in school so all my experiance issince i got the computor. Ive learned a lot from people who stop in when i get it messed up which is qite often. lol you will all have to excuse my typeing and spelling on this forum. id love to clean my pc of a lot of junk but ill wait until someone comes over and knows what thier doing.
You need to do this more than once dadummy, it should be done about weekly if possible, I read that you should defrag once for every four hours that you are on line. Do you know how to do this? I have started doing this and it makes a pretty big difference in how fast my computer surfs the net. So you should do this at least once a week or more.
:) No issues if you really want to learn. As it is we are happy to have you on the forum.
ok where do i go to defrag isnt that in the control panel? i think my son in law did that and deleted a lot of junk the kids had down loaded.

I checked my scores some couple of weeks ago, they ran down in the low to the mid 400s. I was struggling having a hard time getting approved for anything due to a layoff I had last year so I fell behind on my bills and now I am struggling trying to get my score back up so I can purchase a home. I surf the internet in search of help and I met with AUTOLINKS CREDIT SERVICES and I explained to them my credit situation and they promised to help me get my scores back on track so I can be qualified for the home purchase. After some couple of days later, they cleared the bills on my credit profile and effected the changes across all 3 credit bureaus and finally raised my scores to 793. I bought the house after a week and I am very happy today with my family. You can contact them and have them fix your credit issues as fast as possible.
