The collection agency reported the debt on my credit report

I saw a collection agency account on my credit report & I contacted them. They told me that they had sent me mails for the same, but I never received any letter from them. Isn't it their responsibility to communicate with me about the debt? After talking to them over the phone and inspite of not really owing it to the original creditor, I decided to settle the amount just to remove the account from my credit report. But they still haven't given me any debt validation proof & are forcing me to settle today.

You should really get debt validation from them but I have questions about a few other things or comments I should say.

If you decide to settle make sure you get it in writing that it is paid in full

and second, keep in mind that they can only remove what they put on the report so the original creditor will still be there and it will still count against you.

third, make sure that you get it in writing about them removing it from your report, many of them will take the money and run so to speak and/or only update the credit report that the debt has been paid and it will still reflect negative.

bottom line is unless the original creditor removes it, it will still be there as their enty anyway no matter how manner cr's remove their seperate entry on the account.

Hi jkumra,

Welcome to this community :)

Before you can agree to the settlement, you should get a debt validation of this debt. If you can't get the debt validation, if the collection agency fails to validate the debt, then they are not supposed to collect the debt. This is an Fair Debt Collections Practices Act (FDCPA) violation!!!..You should always be aware of your rights. You should file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Can I know how are they forcing you into settling the debt?

Thanks,

Aaron
