I have a judgment against someone that owes me money. She does not own anything I can put a lien against and doesn't work. But, she receives a sizable amount of alimony monthly. Can I treat the alimony like "wages" and garnish it? Puzzled in New Jersey.

Hi puzzled,

Income coming from alimony cannot be garnished as such. However, I don't know about New Jersey. Garnishment laws vary from state to state. Thus, you can check your state laws on garnishment. You can even talk to a lawyer about this, who deals with cases on alimony.

Thanks,

Aaron
