I recently disputed an account that appeared on my TransUnion credit report, an account that I never opened. The result of the dispute is that they "verified" the account as mine and they are not going to delete it. I sent a letter via certified mail, along with a copy of my credit report, with the account on dispute highlighted, so they could not have missed it. Now that they told me that the account is not going to be deleted, what can I do to dispute this? Whats the next step? Thank you for your time.
Before disputing the account, I called the store's costumer service explaining my situation, and they told me that a person named like me opened an account, but he had no social security number, had a different address than mine of course, and recommended me to dispute directly to the credit bureau.
Disputing a wrong item
Hi,
Can you tell whether or not you had send a debt validation letter to the company reporting this item? If not, you can try sending one now. Hop that the store won't be able to validate your debt. Send the debt validation letter through certified mail, requesting a return receipt. If they fail to validate this debt, you can try disputing this item with the credit bureaus. This time, attach the debt validation proof along with the letter. Send the dispute letter through certified mail too.
If this time too the credit bureaus fail to comply to your dispute request, file a complaint with your State Attorney General, and Fair Debt Collections Practices Act.
Thanks,
Aaron
