First step in disputing/verifying/settling CC collection

I have a collection on my credit report from a CC I opened when I lived in Michigan. I now live in Maryland. I am confused about whether the account is still held by the OC or has been sold to a CA. Here is the verbiage from myfico:

The collection agency "168yc03615" was hired to collect a debt of $XXXX originally owed to ORIG CRED on account number XYZ.

I am also confused as to whether the debt has passed the because there are so many dates listed on the entry:

Date assigned: 1/1/2004
Date reported: 4/1/2010
Date last active: 9/1/2003

The type of account & credit are not reported.

Hi mnjrussell,

You can first try validation this debt with the collection agency. This will give you some time to talk to your original creditor, since a collection agency cannot continue with the collection process until they validates your debt. Thus, in the meantime, you can talk to the original creditor. Request the creditor to pull back the account from the collection agency.

If the debt has been sold off, the creditor won't be able to pull back the account. Else, it can get pulled back. If the creditor pulls back the account, you can deal with the original creditor, and pay the dues to the him.

Thanks,

Aaron

I was just wondering if I should pursue removal if either of those old dates are the ones used to determine whether the debt is still within SOL? If not and this is still valid, I will do what you suggest.

BTW, I have never gotten a single call or letter from the CA. Just the credit report entry.

Hi,

Can you tell the date when you first went delinquent on this account?

Thanks,

Aaron
