My mom was living with a man for 21 years and they purchased a mobile home together, of which he was making the mortgage payments on and she was paying the space rent. He did not inform her that he was three months behind on the payments. She found out after they split up due to his domestic abuse and she called the mortgage company to find out what she could do to have her name taken off of the paperwork. My mom is on partial SSI because of her age and she just left her boyfriend a day ago and does not have a job yet. What can she do aside from making payments to settle the debt?

Hi Robin,

Welcome to this community :)

Removing one's name from a mortgage is not that easy. To do that they need to either refinance the house or sell it if he can't qualify for the refinancing. It is better to take advice from a lawyer about this. Can you tell, what did the mortgage company say?

However, under the Federal Law Social Security income cannot be garnished by creditors or lenders.

Thanks,

Aaron
