yes they can. Your girl friend needs to open a separate account. The law provides some protection for injured spouse, but NOTHING for girlfriends.

Generally speaking, if you have a joint account along with your girlfriend, the creditor can take money from that account, if you owe him money. Still, you can check your state laws on garnishment. However, it's better to remove her name from this joint account, and open a new one in her name only.
