What’s the best way to deal with a collection agency when you don’t have the money to pay them? Also, is there a limit to how many items I can dispute on my credit report? Can someone answer my questions.

The first thing you need to find out is how old is the debt, if it is past the statute of limitations then you don't have to deal with it at all, you need to check that out first, you can leave your state of residence here and someone will check it out for you and leave the information here for you when you return.

Have you tried working out an acceptable payment arrangement with them if it is in that statute of limitations that I mentioned above?

I saw this post and just didn't know how to answer it..LOL GN is right about the SOL. If the SOL is 'expired' and you try to make some kind of arrangement AFTER it is 'expired' then you would be 're-aging' the debt.which means the SOL starts all over again. So..yes..it's important you find out what it is in the state in which you live.

I would like to say to ignore them if it is past the SOl but soem of these companies will go as far as suing you even if they know the debt is past SOL. They will try this to get you to pay. I dealt with this recently. Here is what I did(with good advice from someone here). I sent them a debt validation and also called them and told them the debt they were trying to collect was past the sol. They still had a ton to say but after I told them this I quit picking up the phone. They know where to reach me and I still have the SOL on my side. Be sure you check your especially if it is a debt collector and not the original lender.

If they do sue and it is past the statute of limitations and you can bet it thrown out on those grounds.

Well...that's does clear up a few things!! Thanks, ya'll!! I wasn't sure if a CA can STILL try to sue, even after the SOL is expired. I;ve never been sued by any CA. What is the best 'effective' method: telling them that over the phone or sending a letter? I know when you talk to these CA's, on the phone, they usually record what you say.
