What are my options and how should I handle this?

I was invovled in an automobile accident without insurance (I had just purchased the vehicle). Now I'm being sued by the insurance company for a large sum that I do not have. I am a student.

Not sure how they will handle this. They may collect on it after you get a job. But if you are sued and they win the case you will have to pay. They may even hold your parents responsible if you are a minor. Was the accident your fault. I believe I would contact an attorney and see what he advises you to do. What I have posted I have just heard from other people. So it is just talk not the law. So I don't mean to scare you. Calling an attorney he will know how to handle it.

cultus_polemos, I can not understand how their would have not been insurance on the vehicle. Most states and lenders make sure there is insurance before the vehicle even leaves their lot. I just recently purchased one and that was the first thing I was asked for.
Now if somehow you did not have insurance then I am afraid you will be responsible for paying the entire amount. They may agree to payment arrangements or possibly settle the debt for less. Usually the only way they will settle for less is if you have the cash in full.
